Motorcycle, ATV and Cargo Trailer Theft Problem

Theft of Motorcycles, ATVs and Cargo Trailers continues to spiral out of control. The construction industry is particularly hard hit because it not only results in a loss of assets but a loss of income as well. Our solutions include sophisticated Trailer Alarm Systems to deter theft and GPS Tracking to recover the asset should it be stolen. We also have available a full line of high quality locks, chains and cables.

ATVs and other off road vehicles in most cases the recovery rate is less than 35 percent if they are stolen. One of the reasons for this is that those vehicles do not require license plates and are used off road away from the public view. So a thief can operate with relatively little risk of being caught. The problem with ATV and other off road vehicles thefts occur mostly in what would traditionally be considered low crime suburban areas of the country. Our Scorpio Alarm Systems and Armed Guard Systems are designed for motorcycles and ATVs and even Snow Mobiles.

According to an article written by Brian McCombie from OutdoorLife .com, Mr. McCombie writes:

March 2006

Each year, thousands of hunters across the U.S. have their ATVs stolen, often right behind their backs while they re a field. According to David Griffith, Texas Department of Public Safetys motor vehicle theft commander, deer hunters on isolated ranches or hunting leases figure theyre all alone, when in fact thieves are actively looking for the expensive and often unlocked ATVs. In Texas we usually start seeing increased losses in October, he says. The spree continues through December, when the standard theft rate of 150 ATVs a month jumps to 200.

In 2002, Texas saw 1,576 ATVs stolen, and more than 900 in the first half of 2003. Roughly 35 percent are recovered. Most ATV owners dont have the serial number written down, and the vehicles arent registered. Owner descriptions often amount to, Well , its a red Honda. Heres the ccs on the engine, Griffith notes.

Some stolen ATVs, says Griffith , are sold to businesses that want to keep their overhead down. This even includes the occasional deer-hunting lease where the owner provides client hunters with, you guessed it, the use of stolen ATVs.

Our Trailer Dog Alarm and Pro-Tec Alarm Systems are designed specifically for cargo trailers. We have also a portable alarm system by Armed Guard that is designed for flat bed landscape type trailers. The Trailer Dog System is solar powered and the Pro-Tec System is also upgradeable for Solar Power as well.

Our all new proprietary covert Trailer Tracker GPS tracking system can be easily installed in most cargo trailers and is completely concealed. It comes complete with its own high capacity battery that needs charging only once a month. Or you can add the optional solar battery charger.

Rider Safety Problem: Motorcycle Fatalities Are Increasing

According to a report released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) DOT HS 809 360

Single vehicle motorcycle crashes account for about 45 percent of all motorcyclist fatalities. More than 38,000 motorcyclists have died in single vehicle motorcycle crashes between 1975 and 1999. The report claims to provide data for insight into possible causes for these fatalities. According to the report, from 1990 through 1999, there were a total of 11,038 fatal single vehicle motorcycle crashes. During that same time period, there were an estimated 294,000 non-fatal single vehicle motorcycle crashes. Of these, an estimated 39,000 involved property damage only and 255,000 involved injuries. Motorcyclist fatalities in single vehicle motorcycle crashes decreased each year from 1990 to 1996, reaching a historic low of 937 in 1996 and again in 1997. In 1998, the fatalities increased to 1,042 (11.2 percent increase); in 1998 and in 1999 they increased to 1,140 (9.4 percent). The overall increase in motorcyclist fatalities from 1997 to 1999 was 203 (21.7 percent).

Report Conclusions: Findings from the FARS (Fatality Analysis Reporting System) data illustrate possible reasons for motorcyclist fatalities in single vehicle motorcycle crashes:

  • Helmet use among fatally injured motorcyclists below 50 percent
  • More motorcyclist fatalities are occurring on rural roads
  • High blood alcohol levels are a major problem among motorcycle operators
  • Half of the fatalities are related to negotiating a curve prior to the crash
  • Over 80 percent of the fatalities occur off roadway
  • Undivided roadways account for a majority of the fatalities
  • Almost two thirds of the fatalities were associated with speeding as an operator contributing factor in the crash
  • Almost 60 percent of motorcyclist fatalities occur at night
  • Collision with a fixed object is a significant factor in over half of the fatalities
  • Braking and steering maneuvers possibly contribute for almost 25 percent of the fatalities
  • More riders age 40 and over are getting killed
  • Almost one third of the fatally injured operators did not have a proper license

1998 Motorcycle Facts:

  • 2,284 motorcyclists died and approximately 49,000 were injured in highway crashes in the United States .
  • Per mile traveled in 1998, a motorcyclist is approximately 16 times more likely to die in a crash than an automobile occupant. And 3x (times) as likely to be injured.
  • Head injury is a leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes.
  • In 1998, 46% of fatally injured motorcycle drivers were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
  • NHTSA estimates that motorcycle helmets reduce the likelihood of a fatality by 29% in a crash.
  • In 1998, 41% of all motorcycle drivers involved in fatal crashes were speeding.
  • Nearly one out of five motorcycle drivers (18%) involved in fatal crashes in 1998 was operating with an invalid license at the time of the collision.
  • Motorcycle drivers involved in fatal crashes in 1998 had higher intoxication rates than any other type of motor vehicle driver at 31%.
  • In 1998, 500 motorcyclists lives were saved due to helmet usage; 307 could have been saved.

Motorcycle, ATV and Equestrian Accidents Can Result In Serious Injuries

Every year thousands of Motorcycle and ATV accidents occur the most serious of which are those that damage the head, neck and spinal cord. Wearing helmets have provided some protection for the head but up until now there was not much advancement made for the neck and torso. That has all changed.

Introducing the Hit Air Vest

Air vest technology was first introduced a few years ago. Those first versions were heavy, hot, bulky and not very stylish. Airprotek , a Japanese based company has introduced the most technologically advanced air vest available on the market. Development of this product began in 1995. It is the first such system that will inflate to provide protection to the wearer's neck, back and hip. The product has been extensively field tested and can be much more effective in reducing serious injury than wearing standard riding gear alone.

It may come as a surprise to most people but injuries caused by horse back riding is 2000 percent higher than the injury rate of motorcycle riders. Horseback riding carries a higher injury rate than motorcycle riding. According to the Hughston Sports Medicine Foundation, on average, motorcyclists suffer an injury once every 7000 hours of riding. By contrast, an equestrian (horseback rider) may have a serious accident once every 350 hours.

Children are particularly at risk for both the power sport market and the equestrian market. We predict that this will be one of the valuable products available for providing an extra measure of safety for our children. The children's version is scheduled to be available some time in the fourth quarter 2006.

Personal GPS Tracking Systems

Personal location GPS Tracking devices are increasingly needed for the location of kidnap victims, Alzheimer's patients, hikers and other out door adventurers can sometime get lost or abducted.

Coming soon the CAT's Eye , is the world's smallest GPS Tracking device which incorporates GPS/GPRS/RF/FIXED IP. This device is roughly about the size of a box of matches, including the battery and antenna. The system can be configured to automatically send out a distress signal should it not detect the motion of the wearer at a pre-selected time interval. Or it can be configured to send out a distress signal if it does detect motion as would be needed in the case of a stolen asset.
